Understanding the Role of Counselling

Counselling offers a confidential and non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences. People seek counselling for many different reasons, including anxiety, stress, low mood, relationship difficulties, loss, low self-esteem or significant changes in their lives.

At Rain Drops Counselling, I offer online integrative counselling. This means I draw from different therapeutic approaches depending on your individual needs, while keeping empathy, respect and the counselling relationship at the centre of the work.

I will not tell you what to do or decide what is best for you. Instead, I will listen carefully, seek to understand your experience and work alongside you at a pace that feels manageable.

What Can You Expect From Counselling?

Beginning counselling can feel uncertain, especially when you have not experienced it before. Knowing what to expect may make taking the first step feel easier.

An Introductory Conversation

Our first conversation gives you an opportunity to explain what has brought you to counselling, ask questions and decide whether you feel comfortable working with me.

It also allows us to discuss practical matters such as session times, confidentiality, how online counselling works and what you hope to gain from the process.

Confidentiality

What you share during counselling is treated as private and confidential.

There are limited circumstances where confidentiality may need to be broken, particularly where there is a serious risk of harm or a safeguarding concern. I will explain these limits clearly before we begin working together.

An Integrative Approach

Every person is different, so I do not believe that one way of working suits everyone.

I use an integrative approach, drawing mainly on person-centred principles while also using ideas and techniques from other therapeutic approaches when appropriate.

This may include CBT-informed techniques, such as exploring patterns in thoughts and behaviour, as well as psychodynamic ideas that consider how earlier experiences may affect the present.

The approach will be shaped around your needs, experiences and goals. I will explain how I work and make sure the process feels suitable for you.

Online Counselling

Sessions are currently offered online.

Online counselling allows you to speak from a private and familiar space without travelling to an appointment. You will need a quiet location, a reliable internet connection and a device with video and sound.

Some people find online counselling more accessible because they can attend from home and avoid travel, waiting rooms or unfamiliar surroundings.

Common Reasons People Seek Counselling

People may seek counselling for many reasons, including:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Low mood or depression
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Low self-esteem
  • Difficult emotions
  • Life transitions and uncertainty
  • Feeling stuck, confused or disconnected
  • Problems with motivation or procrastination
  • Difficult past experiences
  • A desire to understand themselves better

You do not need to have a diagnosis or know exactly what is wrong. Sometimes people begin counselling because they feel that something is not right, even if they cannot yet explain it clearly.

Getting the Most From Counselling

There is no perfect way to take part in counselling. You do not need to prepare the right words or arrive with clear goals.

It may help to:

  • Speak as openly as you feel able
  • Ask questions when something is unclear
  • Reflect on what feels important between sessions
  • Attend regularly where possible
  • Tell me if something in the counselling relationship does not feel right
  • Give yourself time, as meaningful change may not happen immediately

Counselling is a shared process. Honest communication can help us understand what you need from the work and whether the approach remains helpful.
